Today’s Call to Action: Assignments for Autism Acceptance

28 Oct

I often find myself asking for the sun and the moon at the schools of my clients. Something they have not done, might not want to do, and often see no point to doing. “We’ve tried that” is a response I hear frequently and, I must admit, there is a small voice in my head that says, “Yes, but did you do it right?” My real voice says, “Yes, but have you tried it in tandem with ….”

In general, my attitude is ask for it, the worst they can say is “no”. Ironically, I never prepare myself for “no” nor do I even like to hear it. The reality, though, is that we do hear it because we have to — schools can’t do it all, nor should they have to. So, it becomes a game of fractions. What fraction is your son or daughter getting? And, importantly, how did you get those services? I want to hear about your successes — as do others — and your failures.
